What is Toyota OBD Codes?

Toyota OBD Codes is a free, no-sign-up lookup for the manufacturer-specific codes a Toyota, Lexus or Scion sets on top of the generic standard. This set starts at the cabin and the chassis rather than the engine: airbag and restraint systems, ABS and stability control, the hybrid brake system, then fuel, ignition and transmission. Each page says what the code means, how serious it is, what usually causes it, and the order to check it.

How Toyota trouble codes work

Every Toyota runs the shared SAE codes plus its own. The maker codes on this site are weighted to the body and the chassis, where Toyota puts most of its own faults: airbag and restraint circuits, ABS and stability control, the hybrid brake system, and the ignition and fuel metering that feeds them. On 1996-and-newer Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles, pull codes with an OBD-II scanner through the DLC3 connector under the dash. Older Toyotas flash codes if you jump the TC and CG terminals. A few patterns cause most Toyota check-engine lights. P1349 and P1354 mean the VVT-i system is not answering on bank 1 or the right bank. Usually sludged oil, a sticking oil control valve, or wrong viscosity. Start with an oil change, not parts. P1300 flags the igniter circuit for cylinder one. Spark with no fire, sudden no-start. P1128 means the electronic throttle motor locked. The car goes into limp mode. And P1604 is a startability record. The engine cranked without starting. Look at fuel, spark, or immobilizer based on what else is stored.
